This is it

By Sam Hendrian

We didn’t say much over the course of dinner –
Then again, we never did –
There for the presence
Rather than the conversation.

One of those slow-burn friendships
Constantly flickering
Yet consistently bright
Even when we both had no light left.

Afterwards we got ice cream
In the name of extension
Because we each had more things to convey
Through pregnant pauses.

Knew “see ya soon” would only be truthful
For another couple weeks
Before being swapped out with the much more pragmatic
“See you when I see you.”

I thought to myself, “Guess this is it,”
“Guess this is the place I’ll be remembering”
Since I’ve always been a Last Supper kind of guy
Associating food with farewell.

Missed many opportunities to use the word “miss”
Since that would be cliche
And the basis of our bond
Was in letting the obvious stay implied.
