The Illusion of Dance

By Christine Leoni

The audience blurs, swallowed by the blinding lights.

Adrenaline surges through my veins, an intricate blend of anxiety and anticipation.

I rise and fall with tedious timing, crafting rhythmic patterns.

The music resounds in my ears, pushing and pulling my body to contour various shapes.

Each powerful movement creates the illusion of effortless flight.

I rotate on my internal axis, snapping my head with every executed turn.

My limbs extend and contract reaching for something invisible to grasp.

Gravity tugs at my weightless figure as I leap into the air and land on the final note.

A moment of silence hovers, then an ovation breaks it.

I slightly lower my knee, exhaling euphoria, as the stage fades to black.
