Husband Speaks

By Barbara Santucci

She comes to me each morning,

feathers strung in bracelets around her wrists,

sleek blue heron feathers.

She flew among the stars last night

guided by the moon to places

I have never been.

Midnights, she eats toast

at our kitchen table, staring out

at the night sky.

I slide beneath bedcovers,

hoping she will stay tonight

and not fly away,

leaving feathers on her pillow.

Mornings, I am content to find her beside me

with blackberry-stained lips, soft down in her hair

and arms in a wide wingspan

around me.
