Autumn Untangled

By Jennifer Susan Smith

Sunrise bestows nettings

in early light, rays knot

clouds, loop vapors into

open patterns, forming nets

fused with promises of

delicate designs, fresh

catches in open waters.

I face choices. rise,

reach for the textile,

stroke fabric’s form,

consider its purpose.

clutch it briefly, but

release it back to dawn,

defiant to new discoveries.

If I pull the net

into my stagnated

slumber, my limbs

ensnarl the mesh,

dreams entangle

in woven fusion

of fear and worry.

Instead, I follow it

to Alabama coast,

for surprises at dinner

of bluefish and flounder,

seasoned and served

by candlelight

and moonbeams.

At sunset, I drift to sleep

in airy tent, breezes ease

through webbed windows

that barricade me

from menaces that bite.

Waking at twilight,

I walk the beach

with childlike wonder,

dance at ocean’s

edge in tutu of tulle,

the blue of October

Atlantic.
