The Fox Squirrel

By D.H. Jeffrey

Brown coat

Yellow underbelly

Turns a morsel of food

in its tiny claws,

examining it closely

like a poet turning a phrase,

seeking just the right word.

Pondering it now,

maybe scratching it out later.

D.H. Jeffrey is a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked briefly for several government agencies. In addition to his civil service work, David also attended the University of Michigan where he completed three degrees in the social sciences.
