Cookie Givers

By Susan Shea

Cookie givers understand

we are all too wounded

to use our mouths

to tell each other where it hurts

so, they buy us

soothers made of cinnamon

pacifiers made of peanut butter

cheerleaders made of chocolate chips

cookie givers want to heal

our aching mouths with

bandages made of butter

ointments made of oatmeal

cookie givers want to distract us

from sadness and make us

believe goodness can come

as a surprise

from beyond or homemade

let us always remember

the cookie givers who show us

how to chew and talk at the same time

God bless the cookie givers
