Changeling

By Kimberly Wolf

I conjure her when the weather’s right–

bird-boned changeling haunting mirrors,

wan and weary-eyed peeking through the pane.

Baby’s breath fogging glass,

she questions me in silence:

will the future be kind to us?

I swallow the jagged years,

cough up a shattered offering:

we will become kind in spite of it.
